Ever-Bloom
4701 Foothill Road, Carpinteria, CA 93013, United States
There is nothing more satisfying in life than growing plants, whether they are food, fiber or flowers. I planted my first vegetables when I was 11 years old and although I was told that carrots can only be “thinned out”, NOT transplanted, I was not about to waste a single carrot. Much to my father’s amusement, I first thinned out and then carefully transplanted about a hundred carrots. Albeit a bit deformed, they all grew into full sized carrots; maybe that’s what sealed my future as a grower of plants and flowers.
We emigrated from Holland in 1967 (the same year as my carrot debut) and settled in one of the best towns of America – Carpinteria, CA. My forefathers had been growers for the last several hundred years, so I guess you can say that growing plants runs in the gene pool. Having visited Holland on many occasions since, I can safely say that our move from my Dutch town, Naaldwijk to Carpinteria, was the most valuable gift my father could have given his family. Not only has the private enterprise system of America given us incomparable opportunities, the quality of life and the freedom to pursue one’s dreams are still very much a part of the American fiber.
With over 275 gerbera varieties to choose from, Ever-Bloom’s niche is to fill just about any special order that our customers may need. Our 15 acre state of the art greenhouses ensure that our crop is top quality, which is then handled by a highly trained and dedicated staff to guarantee customer satisfaction. Our “closed loop” growing technique allows us to recycle all of our water and fertilizer and makes certain that that waste is kept to a minimum. The backbone of our integrated pest management (IPM) program is the predacious insects that are constantly released to keep harmful pests under control.
Carpinteria is blessed with the most amazing microclimate that allows farmers to grow a multitude of different crops. Although our greenhouses are a necessity for growing Gerbera Daisies and Anthurium; in Carpinteria, we can often just open up the greenhouse vents and let Mother Nature do her thing. So do I live in paradise? I sure do!

Farmers’ West Flowers and Bouquets
5300 Foothill Rd, Carpinteria, CA 93013, United States
Can you imagine manufacturing tennis shoes? Or tennis balls for that matter? I know that I can’t. I prefer the smell of freshly plowed fields, mulched greens and the sound of field irrigation going on. I love seeing the new, bright green buds on a lily stem and the unfurling of new Gerbera (there is no such word as a gerbera daisy; that is made up by Americans!!) blooms. Everyday, sunshine or fog is a great day on my farm.
California is a special place to be a farmer, especially in the micro-climate of the Carpinteria Valley. My company, Farmers’ West Flowers & Bouquets, can grow flowers year round due to the mild coastal temperatures. Some of our products include Dutch specialties such as lilies, tulips, as well as my new favorites – ornamental kale and zinnias. As a grower and shipper, these flowers, along with dozens of other flowers, greens and European-style hand-tied bouquets, can be shipped to wholesalers and mass market customers all over the United States.
As a first generation grower, I am celebrating my 20th year in business. My company is special to me because it represents the best of myself – fast paced, energetic, bright and colorful. I care deeply about my company and my employees and I am keenly aware that these men and women are an integral part of the success of Farmers’ West. They are dedicated to me and I to them.
One of the biggest challenges facing my company is responding quickly to the ever-changing marketplace. I work closely with my sales and marketing teams to stay abreast of the latest in design, color trends and styles in order to ensure my customers have the best flowers and bouquets to meet their needs. Please visit us on the web to learn more!

Gallup and Stribling Orchids
3450 Via Real, Carpinteria, CA 93013, United States
You might say growing is in my blood as I am a third generation grower. I remember as a young child “helping” my Grandfather grow succulents and I have been hooked on growing ever since. Both of my Grandfathers were growers. One of them introduced new innovative growing methods to successfully grow Odontoglossum orchids garnering him many awards and trophies. But, it was my father, Alex Stribling, who started his own orchid company, who taught me the most about growing. As a child in elementary school, I often helped out at my father’s company, Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Inc. filling water tubes and helping with packing. When I was eighteen I began working full time at Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Inc. and spent the next eighteen years growing foliage plants. Since then I have grown Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedelium and Cymbidium orchids. Today, with over forty years of growing experience, I am responsible for growing all forty-eight acres of Cymbidium orchids at Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Inc.
Growing orchids is both challenging and rewarding. Orchids truly are one of Nature’s masterpieces and it is heartwarming to bring such incredible beauty to people everyday. Two other things make my work gratifying. The first is our employees. Our employees are competent and experienced; many of our employees have been with us for thirty years or more. I think this is a testament to how well our company treats its employees. In return, their loyalty, dedication and passion are the backbone of our company.
Another thing that makes my work so satisfying is where we are located. If you explored the entire world to find the best spot to grow Cymbidium orchids you very well might find yourself in Carpinteria, California. Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Inc. is nestled between the Carpinteria foothills and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Our greenhouses are only about one hundred yards from the ocean so our orchids grow in the cooling breezes of the Pacific. The climate here makes it the ideal place to grow Cymbidium orchids. I love the California climate and lifestyle and so do our Cymdidium orchids. You might just say it is a match made in heaven.

Kendall Farms
4230 White Lilac Road, Fallbrook, CA 92028, United States
There are things you love about being a grower and things you don’t, but ultimately it is what you make of it. I started working at the farm when I was 13…22 yrs ago working every job there was with my father, David Kendall, the founder of Kendall Farms. He was my inspiration and taught me everything. When he was diagnosed with cancer, I began taking over the operation. He was so incredibly generous, letting me take on new roles, make mistakes, learning as I go and this gave me the confidence to lead the company when he passed in 2004. My passion is continually growing our business to its fullest potential with my team…my family…of growers.
I say family because that is what we are at Kendall Farms. We were united by our biggest challenge to date, the fire in 2007. Pulling together, all the employees help put out the fire that was blazing in the field. That day attitudes shifted! Everyone started leaning on each other to support the company like a big extended family, not just depending on it for a job. We lost 75% of our crop due to the fire but have restored to date 80% of it. The silver lining of it is that now we are a more cohesive company up for any challenge.
And growing in California is not without its challenges. Over regulation and restrictive water usage limitations can stunt our growth. However, California, being the 8th largest economy in world, is also one of the best locations for growing our flowers. The wonderful microclimate we grown in (what is the area called) is unique and allows Kendall to offer a typically South African or Australian product to the mainstream market, providing them with long-lasting product that lasts and has an exotic look. The people of California make it worthwhile. They embrace their local farmers and show an incredible sense of loyalty. Ever since the inception of the California Grown campaign and the VeriFlora Certification, Kendall Farms has seen the pull-through benefits of increased demand for California Grown products with all of their supermarket customers. Thank-you California!

Maximum Nursery
4575 Foothill Road, Carpinteria, CA 93013, United States
I came to be a grower much the same way as did my father and his father and his father before him. Growing has been part of my family’s life for many, many generations. Whether it was vegetables, fruits or flowers, there was always a close connection to the earth and experimenting with different growing techniques. When I was six years old in Holland, I ventured for the first time into what would eventually become my life’s vocation. My brother and I were partners growing cacti that we sold to our neighbors – it was our first agricultural enterprise.
My father taught me aspects of the nursery business from an early age by allowing me to help in the nursery getting product ready for market and cleaning up in the greenhouse. It gave me an appreciation for the amount of work it takes to run a nursery operation. Dad worked many twelve hour days and at times seven days a week.
Coming to the US from Holland was a wise move on the part of our parents, and settling in the Carpinteria Valley was a little miracle.
Carpinteria has all the right conditions for growing perfect flowers; the prefect amount of sunshine, temperate climate and ideal humidity levels make Carpinteria heaven for most blooms.
When I started at Maximum in 1982, my Dad and I planted a trial of a new flower, the Gerbera daisy. That half acre trial gave us plenty of challenges. We were the first growers in the US to grow them for the commercial market and my dad was sure that this crop would be one that would change the industry.
You have to be a risk taker in the nursery industry. It’s a field where one is constantly challenged by growing a live product, anticipating and/or responding to consumer trends and there is always at least one fire burning. Growing flowers is a passion, and that passion has strong roots when you have grown up in this environment. It’s incredibly gratifying that bright and early each morning, I open the door to the greenhouses to be greeted by a sea of bright and cheery colors. The Gerbera has been a favorite of mine for many years, it has broad appeal and a bouquet without a Gerbera daisy is just not all it should be.
This industry, like many others, is changing at a rapid pace. We are doing our best to adapt to market forces, environmental concerns, technology advances, and to making sure that the next generation can continue to enjoy the beauty and the challenges of this vocation well into the future.

McGrath Family Farms
505 Wood Rd, Camarillo, CA 93010, United States
Here at McGrath Family Farms our flowers are a working asset. They are an integral component of our cropping program. The more sustainable we become the more the need for diversity. We border crop our high value crops with a wild flower mixture which in return maximizes pollination. We plant other flowers to attract beneficial insects to keep a healthy balance in our fields. All of our flowers, just like all our fruits and vegetables, are grown organically and seasonally. Everything is picked that day and seems to last longer because of the slower growing process, (i.e. no chemical fertilizers). Our flowers really are the final touch to our farm. Some flowers you can expect to see here throughout the year are; Sunflowers, Caspia, Statice, Tuberose, Callalilly, Lavender, Amaranth, Aster, and more. We even offer some edible flowers, as well as, our own organic flowers. At our market we offer Ventura County locally grown flowers. Come by, check it out, bunches or bouquets. Ocean Breeze Farms
3910 North Via Real Carpinteria, CA 93013
My favorite part of growing are Sundays…I love Sundays…I get to walk around the quiet Greenhouses and admire all the work we have accomplished during the week.
Growing has been a tradition of my family’s since the 1600’s when the Van Wingerdens started growing berries and apples for additional income in Holland. That was just the beginning. Soon crops went from fields to commercialized greenhouse, from vegetables to flowers and from Holland to California.
I first started growing while working for my father, who has been my life’s inspiration, at his company called Dutch Brothers. After growing up in the family nursery, I decided to start my own growing tradition by forming Ocean Breeze International in 1973 and there was no better place to grow than in the perfect microclimate of Carpinteria.
Years have gone by, product lines have evolved, but some things will never change. Ocean Breeze still provides their customers with outstanding service, our product is of exceptional quality and I still love Sundays!

Ocean View Flowers
1105 Union Sugar Avenue, Lompoc, CA 93436, United States
We have a passion for quality… and we are on a mission of continuous quality improvement. Ocean View Flowers is located in the Lompoc Valley, fifty miles northwest of Santa Barbara near the Pacific Ocean. The valley’s unique geological and geographic conditions make it one of the finest flower growing regions in California. The Lompoc coast is where the northern and southern currents of the Pacific Ocean meet. This unique coastal phenomenon results in the cool ocean breezes that help provide excellent growing and harvesting conditions for all our varieties. California has many different microclimates. In the winter months we follow the warmer temperatures to the southern dessert area of Brawley and then north to the high dessert of Maricopa. Our cold chain management practices are state of the art. Every box is custom packed in a 48 degree cooler with 85 percent relative humidity/dew point to reduce condensation. After packing, boxes are moved to our storage cooler which is maintained at 36 degrees. Boxes are pre-cooled prior to shipment. Pre-cooling is a critical link in the chain of life process and with confidence we can say our cold chain management is among the best in the industry. Ocean View Flowers is a Veriflora certified grower.

Pyramid Flowers
3813 Doris Avenue, Oxnard, CA 93030, United States
I learned to love agriculture growing up on my dad’s nursery in Holland. Tracing my roots to the 16th Century, I am not sure what generation grower I am, but it’s certainly in my blood. My father was mainly a vegetable grower but had some standard Mums available in the Fall. I learned to work at his nursery with him and he inspired me to follow in his footsteps. When he, with 3 other brothers and their families, decided to immigrate to California in 1967, the world opened up to me.
Settling on the Central Coast was perfect for a flower grower like me! California’s abundant sunshine, moderate climate and excellent workforce gives me the advantage to consistently produce excellent quality flowers and be within proximity to a very large consumer based market.
Always one to try something new and different, I can remember when we trialed Sunflowers in the 1980’s. They were little known flowers then, but look at their use now!!! Some other revolutionary introductions Pyramid started include: Bouvardia, Lisianthus and Solidago.
Not only do I believe in increasing the diversity of flowers grown in California, but Pyramid Flowers also embraces earth friendly technologies and I have seen the benefits first hand in both production and cost savings. As markets shift towards the masses, Pyramid Flowers, supported by an excellent group of employees dedicated to service and quality, is well prepared to WOW consumers with our colorful, creative and earth friendly bouquets.

Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers
5467 Rainbow Creek Rd, Fallbrook, CA 92028, United States
Growing up in La Florida, a town of 2,700 in the Sierra Madre range in Queretaro State, Mexico, Ismael “Mel” Resendiz was the middle child among 13 in a struggling farm family. In Rainbow, California, today he is the owner of Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers which employs 20 and sells over 200 varieties of flow¬ers and foliage.
His journey to success is a story that encompasses the American dream: Even though you start with nothing, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can be successful.
Mel left home at the age of 14 and traveled to Sinaloa, Mexico, where he started his farming career cutting sugarcane and picking cot¬ton. He also learned a lot about hard work, being quick, consistent, de¬pendable, and getting ahead. Within a few months he graduated from cutting and picking to supervising the entire work crew.
After five years in Sinaloa, at age 18 and with $70 in his pocket, Mel decided to try his luck in the United States. He quickly found a job working at Zorro Protea Farms, which in the early 1960s developed the first commercial Protea nursery in northern San Diego County.
This became Mel’s intro¬duction to the Protea Family – flowers and foliage he had no idea existed, at least not on this planet. “I couldn’t imagine these flowers being used in arrange¬ments; they were so different than any flowers I had ever seen. I thought they must be used to make fancy perfume.”
In 1988, at age 28, Mel was promoted to farm manager at Zorro Farms and was supervising several of his family members who had immigrated to California to join him in his Protea adventure. In 1995, Mel purchased his first piece of land – 10 acres in the hills of Rainbow, CA. He named the parcel “Rainbow Crest”, and quickly filled it with Protea plants. The next year, Mel planted himself in the United States permanently, becoming a naturalized U.S. cit¬izen.
In 1998, the Zorro land was sold to developers, and the operation moved to Rainbow Valley. However, within a year Zorro closed its doors, leaving Mel and his family on their own. They decided to stick with their exciting and unusual flowers. “My broth¬ers thought I was crazy. They were also a little un¬certain about my unorthodox horticultural techniques, which included giving my plants lots of tender, loving care.”
Finally, Resendiz Brothers Protea Growers was formed in 1999 and Mel’s passion for flowers and plants has continued to grow. “These flowers are like my family now – they are all interesting, unique and different, I can’t choose one over the other – I love them all. Flowers are my life!”
Today, Resendiz Brothers is proud to offer an extensive selection of Banksia, Berzelia & Brunia, Filler Flowers and Foliage, Grevillea, Kangaroo Paw, Leucadendron, Leucospermum (Pincushions), and Protea. Resendiz Brother’s mission is to consistently provide the newest, freshest, unique and exotic flowers and foliage available to all their customers throughout the year. As well as to be a valuable educational resource to the floral industry and community on the Proteaceae and the many other unusual flowers and foliage they grown.

Rose Lane Farms
1217 Oak Grove Dr, Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, CA 90041, United States
I am a garden rose goddess! Domestic garden roses are the only product I grow at my boutique farm in Los Angeles County. I love getting up early before sunrise and driving out to the farm to start cutting and watering. When the sun starts to envelope the rose bushes, that is when their fragrance is so permeating. I have a special bush called The Mermaid. It is 15 feet tall, 10 feet wide and still growing. The local birds have made it their sanctuary and I have seen so many baby birds hatch there.
My passion for growing these types of roses is the end result – they are unbelievably fragrant and beautiful. They have a certain nostalgia to them that you do not get from a mass produced rose. They make people remember family members that grew roses, usually a grandmother or mother. I have people stop in from time to time just to walk around and remember times past. Designers enjoy being able to come and see exactly what I have so that they can create that perfect piece for a wedding, print ad, or event. Quite unusual for Los Angeles!

In the late seventies I began helping Joe breed mini’s and intermediate Cymbidium. Since Joe’s passing, I’ve continued with all aspects of the business.

Nation’s Flower Basket Threatened by California’s Thomas Fire
CCFC Creates Interactive Map to Track Fires Near Flower Farms
The nation’s flower basket is being threatened by the Thomas Fire in Southern California, a fire that has already consumed 96,000 acres and is rapidly expanding due to winds and dry conditions.
The fire is burning close to nearly two dozen flower farms in the Carpinteria Valley, known as “the flower basket of the United States.” Smaller fires have also been reported near flower farms in San Diego and Lompoc.
To help track the fires and their potential impact on flower farms, the California Cut Flower Commission (CCFC) has created an interactive online map that shows which of the state’s flower farms are near fire locations. View the map, which is being regularly updated, at ccfc.org/fires.
To add to the conversation and provide additional updates, several Southern California flower farmers will be using Facebook Live to provide updates and video of the fires.
“The map shows the fires statewide and will help answer the question we’re currently hearing a lot, like ‘How are these farms that I’ve bought my flowers for decades from doing?’” said Kasey Cronquist, CCFC CEO and ambassador.
The raging Thomas Fire, which is now edging closer to Ojai and Carpinteria on two fronts and forced the closure of Highway 101 and Highway 150 for hours Thursday as flames burned on both sides of the freeway, started Monday night in Santa Paula and quickly tore through Ventura toward the Pacific Ocean.
The wildfire has 5 percent containment and is burning its way into the Los Padres National Forest.
Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said if the wind continues, and rain doesn’t touch the region, the Thomas fire could continue for a few more weeks.
Visit CCFC.org/fires and follow the California Cut Flower Commission on social media for ongoing updates.
